Voynich Oracle

The Voynich Manuscript Plant Oracle

Dear friends,

In your hands lies a plant oracle based on the Voynich manuscript. Before I explain how to use the cards (although it is very intuitive), I must say a few words about this 15th-century manuscript. It is written by an unknown author in an unknown script, perhaps even language, and has not yet been deciphered. It was named after Wilfred Voynich, who discovered it in Italy in 1912 and subsequently took it to the USA. The unknown, undeciphered script is fascinating in itself, but the "most mysterious book in the world," as it is also nicknamed, bears another big secret. It contains drawings of plants, stars and strange baths. The plant section of the manuscript is probably most famous– dozens of plants that do not exist in our world. Strange leaves and flowers intertwine throughout the pages, without us knowing where the author could have seen such flora. To this day, no one has solved the mystery of the plants or the script.

In 2019, I came across a book reproduction of the manuscript. I leafed through the pages and was fascinated by every plant, as if it was speaking in its own visual language. That is when I decided to artistically adapt the drawings from the Voynich manuscript. I began to convert the sketches from the manuscript into oil paintings in an effort to capture the plants in a more realistic form—the form they might have had, if they actually existed. The longer I have worked on this series, the more the individual plants shift in my imagination—they have become brighter, some have acquired bodies. In my dreams, I walk into strange gardens where I find new, unknown plants. The whole process of creation – re-imagining the manuscript – is incredibly interesting and inspiring. Even after years of trying to gradually capture every single plant into my paintings, I haven’t got tired of it.  Last year, however, I came up with an expansion. I wanted to give the plants even more space and take the painting series to the next level.
You are holding the tangible result of this idea in your hands – a plant oracle based on the Voynich manuscript. On each card, you will find my painting and the meaning each plant speaks to me. I hope they will speak to you in the same tone - kind and soothing.

Enjoy your time with the cards!

Yours,

Klára Sedlo

About the oracle:

The oracle according to the Voynich manuscript is plant-based in its meanings as well – it is primarily about growth, self-care, i.e., the inner spiritual "garden," and cultivating all that is good. In the following meanings, you will often encounter metaphors that refer to the world of plants (so do not take words like "watering yourself” literally). Although taking a hot shower does sound like good idea after a hard day! :)

As with all divination cards and tools, the oracle does not determine our future or present. The oracle nudges our intuition to speak more clearly. We work with the oracle differently than with classic tarot cards. For those of you who also own my previous deck – Oil painting Tarot – please note. Working with these cards is a little bit different. The oracle functions more as a symbolic reflective surface for your thoughts, subconscious, and intuition. Unlike tarot cards, where we interpret their mutual relationships, the oracle gives food for thought and inspiration. The oracle can give us answers to questions such as: What should I focus on right now? Where should I direct my energy? What am I overlooking in this situation? What does my intuition tell me about this?

The oracle is a tool for self-reflection and self-discovery.

3 - The Patient Plant

Growth takes time. Be kind to yourself.

Nothing happens overnight. But growth comes through kindness and time. How can a neglected plant, which we do not treat well, thrive? You must water yourself, give yourself time and good soil. The card symbolically says: be kind to yourself, life is not just about performance. Growth takes time.

4 - Nutrition

What nourishes my soul and brings me joy?

The card symbolizes introspection, a look at our inner and outer worlds. What brings us joy and what exhausts us? It refers to nutrition, to the good things we encounter in life. We can interpret the card as a call to invite joyful and nourishing moments and activities into our lives.

5 - The Winter Plant

A time of rest.

The sun will return. The winter plant symbolizes a time of contemplation, rest, and gathering strength for a new, creative period. The sun is obscured by fog, yet it is still shining. When the winter fog dissolves, the sun will shine in full glory and energy will flow again.

6 - The Expressive Plant

Creativity, colors, blossoming.

The card symbolizes creative freedom, wildness, joy, and happiness. It seems to say: perceive and enjoy life. Create, if you want to paint something. Learn to sing or write. Consider whether now is the right time to let your creativity blossom.

7 - The Garden

Patience and care bear fruit.

Proper gardening will bear fruit. The card symbolizes honest work and care. An activity that is not rushed but is consistent and bears fruit. Think of our life as a garden and us as gardeners. We should consider what we want to grow in our garden. Do we want beautiful, inspiring flowers? Do we want to become professional fruit growers, or leave the garden for rest and inner growth? Do we want all at once, using each part of the garden differently? The card symbolizes organizing life, caring for our life, cultivation— for example, hobbies, happiness, hopes, desires, dreams... The card also reminds us that we should approach our garden attentively: if some fruits are afflicted with disease or wither, they need to be taken care of. This is also true in life (which the garden symbolizes) – if we are bothered by something unpleasant in some part of our life, we need to address it and take care of it. The garden will only thrive if it is entirely healthy. The card also shows that each environment, climate, or season is suitable for a different crop – it encourages us to find the right season and time, but also to grow what individually suits us. After all, a gardener must plan what to plant and when.

8 - The Cellar

Subconscious. Secrets. Mystery.

The Garden card spoke of nurturing our lives—of growing crops, flowers, and care. But every garden has its cellar, shed, or garden house. A place where we store garden tools, harvested fruits, and dried flowers. The Cellar card symbolizes everything that lies "below the surface," hidden, out of sight, but still important. Is there something that we don't see or overlook, but still affects us? The card symbolizes the subconscious, dreams. It can refer to mysteries and secrets, to everything mysterious, deep, and unexplored.

9 - The Levitating Plant

An adventure beyond time and space. What do your dreams tell you?

The levitating plant symbolizes everything supernatural and dreamlike, as if telling us: pay attention to your dreams – they may reflect how we feel or give us clues when we cannot see a situation clearly. It can also symbolize bohemianism, your head in the clouds and new ideas.

10 - The Space Plant

A journey into the depths of the soul.

The card symbolizes the search for an invisible essence, spiritual experiences, astral travel, or a spiritual path. Plants dancing outside our world refer to inner experiences, a search, personal faith and hope.

11 - Root

The need for fertile soil.

The soil that nourishes our roots determines the rate and size of growth. It is difficult for a plant to grow tall with roots in unsuitable soil. Let us ask ourselves what we grow from and where we are growing. How can we better nourish our soul? Are we in an environment that supports or hinders our growth?

voynich-oracle_00_ZADNI.png
voynich-oracle_12.png

12 - The Double-Row Plant

A path, possibilities, crossroads.

The card symbolizes two or more possibilities for growth that lie ahead of us. It symbolizes a crossroads, decision-making or searching. We may have to take one path or the other. Or, like a plant, we may grow in both directions at once.

13 - The Water Plant

The card symbolizes peace and harmony, silence, acceptance, reconciliation. A plant in a water bath exists in a slow, quiet present moment. It symbolizes being here and now, finding peace, mindfulness.

15 - The Plant Still Life

Time to use your skills and knowledge.

The plant lays on the table and will soon be processed—perhaps into food, a miraculous potion, or an inspiring bouquet. The card symbolizes the use of one's abilities. A time when we can take everything we have learned and benefit from it. It can also symbolize a result we are working towards.

16 - A Plant Growing in the Dark

Perseverance leads to the goal. Even if the path is difficult, let's not stop growing.

In the beginning, there was a small, inconspicuous root... Then, a thin stem started growing. Easily overlooked, weathered by the elements and water, growing in the dark. What did it grow into? A glowing bouquet of leaves and flowers. It symbolizes hope, the light at the end of the tunnel. Symbolizes the belief in growth, even if the results of our efforts are not immediate. The card symbolically refers to the fact that we ourselves can be our own light.

17 - A Plant at Sunset

Wildness and energy

The card depicts a sunset – a red-colored sky at the end of a beautiful summer day. The plant seems to be dancing. It symbolizes energy, heat and passion, enthusiasm, desire, and zeal for a cause.

voynich-oracle_18.png

18 - A Large Plant in a Small Format

Growth, stepping out of your shadow.

This plant thrives and spreads—so much that it almost doesn't fit on the card. It symbolizes development and growth, during which we surpass ourselves. It can refer to growth that requires stepping out of our comfort zone, broadening our horizons, leaving behind what no longer serves us. After all, even the plant will need to be transferred to a larger pot to continue developing. The card seems to say: growth brings new challenges, but also new opportunities. And outgrowing your own pot is no easy task.

voynich-oracle_19.png

19 - The Sun and the Moon

Relationships. Friends. Family.

The card symbolizes our loved ones and those with whom we feel comfortable. It also represents a person or people who make up our safe environment. In connection with the card, we can ask ourselves questions such as: How do I feel in my relationships? What do I need in my relationships? What does a healthy relationship look like and how can I work on my relationships with loved ones? Alternatively, it can also refer to the relationship with oneself – how do I feel when I spend time alone? Where and when do I feel comfortable? It can also refer to the polarity of solar and lunar energy. The need for intuition, magic, and creativity versus the energy of movement, dynamics, and work. We can ask ourselves whether these energies are balanced, or whether we lack a little bit of magic and intuition, or, conversely, work in the real world.

voynich-oracle_20.png

20 - Ouroboros

A circle, closure, completeness, infinity.

The card symbolizes a compact unit – similar to the symbol of the ouroboros. The plant "bites" its tail, thus closing the circle. The card does not say what kind of circle it refers to; it only symbolizes its existence and infinity: the ouroboros has no beginning and no end. We ourselves must decide whether it is a safe circle that suits us and in which we want to remain, or a circle from which we need to step out. The card can also symbolize recurring situations, recurring feelings, recurring obstacles, or recurring joy.

It encourages us to take care of our soul, our well-being, to pause and find calmness. It can also symbolize reason and intelligence, mental work, or situations that need thorough consideration.

voynich-oracle_00_ZADNI.png
voynich-oracle_22.png

22 - The Walking Plant

Change and movement.

The plant has pulled its roots out of the ground and is walking to new places. The card symbolizes change, movement, getting to know new environments – whether in a physical sense or metaphorically - walks, time for oneself, activities. It can also symbolize uprooting ourselves from an environment we want to leave and transplanting ourselves into new, better soil.

23 - The Observing Plant

Waiting, calm, perspective.

The plant on the hill has two flowers – pleasantly rounded petals with yellow centers that look like two eyes. It looks out over the landscape while the wind blows neither too warm nor too cold, just right.

voynich-oracle_00_ZADNI.png

24 - A Plant with Leaves that Glow in the Dark

The beauty and rarity of a moment.

The card depicts a plant with glowing leaves, something beautiful and fascinating. At the same time, it captures a crumpled sketch in the lower right corner. Someone tried to capture a rare moment but failed. The unknown artist spent moments in the presence of an unusual natural phenomenon trying to capture it without enjoying it. The card draws our attention to the fleeting and beautiful moments in life. It urges us to notice the pleasant moments around us—whether it's a beautiful sunset, a blooming garden, or moments with the people we love—and to truly enjoy these moments. To be present.

25 - Harvest

Joy, celebration, abundance.

The card depicts a harvest, the fruits of our labor. In the illustration, we see fruits piled up in a bowl that is overflowing with abundance – there will be a feast. The card symbolizes celebration, relaxation, joy, and diligence that leads to harvest, but it also encourages us to think about the practicalities of processing the fruits.

26 - Depth

Recognition and acceptance. Deep thinking. Revealing the essence.

We can barely see into the calyx of the plant on the card. Anything could be hidden behind its folds – thoughts, fears, real feelings, truths we don't want to see, or just our own fear and dark corners. The card symbolizes deep introspection, knowing and accepting oneself, the essence, revealing the truth. It also symbolizes something deep or powerful.

Music, singing, tuning in.

A plant glowing and vibrating with sound in the middle of a quiet meadow. Think of the scene as a magical moment and imagine what kind of sound is echoing through the blue night. The card symbolizes intuition, attunement to one's surroundings or inner self, perceptiveness, but also music and singing.

28 - Balance
(a sunflower in a small pot)

Balance, equilibrium, concentration, stability.

A large sunflower in a container that is too small symbolizes balancing and the need to balance different aspects of life. It can also refer to the necessity for balance or a moment when it has been found. It can also encourage reflection on whether and how to build a solid foundation or anchor oneself in a situation.
